In the grand state rooms, you will find some of the finest decorative plasterwork ceilings in Europe, as well one of the most extensive family collections of portraits and busts in Scotland, fine furnishings, and Maitland family treasures. There is also woodland and riverside walks and adventure playground.<p>Did you know that Thirlestane Castle is one of the seven ‘Great Houses of Scotland’ and its fascinating story began in the 13th century?<br>Thirlestane Castle nestles in the hills of the beautiful Scottish Borders just 35 minutes south of Edinburgh.<br>The Castle was originally a great stone keep but over the years became a grand ducal palace and then a grand country mansion.  It is the ancient seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale, and today it still home for the Maitland family.<br>There are so many fascinating things to see in this splendid building. Exquisite 17th century plasterwork ceilings, fine furnishings, pictures and Maitland family treasures.<br>Explore the Entrance Hall, with a collection of weapons dating from 1745, and the Duke’s Grand Bed Chamber, one of the most impressive rooms in the castle.<br>In the State Dining Room you will find one of the largest collections of family portraits in the country.<br>Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at the castle in 1745, after the victory at the Battle of Prestonpans, and you can admire the room he stayed in for yourself.<br>Facilities include free parking, a woodland walk and a gift shop. Coffees, light lunches and teas are served in the Tea Room.<br></p>
