About this Tour
The State Darwin Museum was originally intended as a museum dedicated to the theory of evolution. All main collections were formed according to this primary idea since its foundation in 1907.
The Darwin museum was initially created as an educational museum at the Moscow Higher Women’s Courses to illustrate the course in the theory of evolution. The extensive collection contained the items (mostly stuffed birds) gathered by the founder and the first director of the museum Alexander Fedorovich Kohts when he was a gymnasium student and a student of the State Moscow University.
The state Darwin Museum is considered one of the largest museums in Moscow and the largest natural science Museum in Europe. Its exposition contains information about the theory of evolution, formation of life on the planet, natural selection and heredity of species.
The Museum presents to visitors a unique collection of albinos, melanistic and rare books.
The state Darwin Museum consists of a majestic three-storey building, which is filled with impressive exhibits, but that's not all. A fascinating underground corridor connects the main building with an additional exhibition complex. You can start the visit from any of the buildings as a single ticket is valid throughout the territory.
